The Lonely Road
Neal Ross

The Wrath of God

A day or so ago I posted something on Facebook; something that just popped into my head out of the blue; graphic of a man facing an empty auditorium, with a few comments above it to explain what the image represented to me. I thought that would be the end of it, but the idea continued to fester in my mind; evolving into what you are about to read.

While the validity of this statement is questionable, I think we’ve all heard the saying, ‘It’s lonely at the top.’ That supposedly refers to the feeling of isolation those who have achieved great wealth or success feel; a feeling of being disconnected from the rest of society. There are numerous reasons why that phenomenon may occur, and I’m not going to waste your time going into any of them here; I only mention this because it serves as an introduction to what I wish to say in this column.

Before I get to that, I hope that no one is under the impression that I am at the top of anything other than my own two feet. I’m just an average guy with no special skills to set him apart from the millions of other average guys just trying to get by in life. Nevertheless, I can relate to the sentiment expressed by that quote. How is that possible Neal; you don’t fit the criteria for that statement? Glad you asked.

I don’t know if everyone else’s experience has been the same, but I have found that the pathway in pursuit of the truth is a pretty lonely place. To put it in other terms, it is a path that doesn’t see much foot traffic. I’m not positively certain why that is so, but I can offer up a couple of educated guesses. First of all, you cannot order the truth from Amazon and have it delivered right to your front door, nor can you pop a couple of truth pills once a day to obtain it. Seeking out the truth requires a certain amount of work; reading, thinking, and sifting through the mounds of disinformation and lies. That could explain why so few people seek out the truth; preferring instead to believe whatever it is they are being told.

People may also have an aversion to the truth; for the truth requires that one constantly challenge/question their beliefs. I believe it is simple human nature to want to surround yourself with people who think and feel the same way you do; it is the rare individual who surrounds themself with those who cause them to question their beliefs and values. Once one chooses to embark upon a journey in pursuit of the truth, if they stick at it for any length of time, they find that their friends slowly begin to distance themselves from them; at least that has been my experience.

That alone might be sufficient to cause people to not pursue the truth; but you know what, I wouldn’t trade the path I’ve chosen for the world; the losses I’ve suffered are nothing compared to what I’ve gained. Besides, I kind of enjoy the peace and solitude of not having a bunch of people around me; spouting ideas and beliefs that they cannot support with a single shred of evidence!

There is one other thing I need to make absolutely clear; I have never, nor will I ever, claim to be in possession of the absolute truth; only God can make that claim. I will say, with a certain amount of confidence, that I am probably a lot closer to the truth than a lot of people; especially those who believe that only government can solve all of the problems facing this country. Don’t get me wrong, there was a time when I used to believe that too; but I outgrew my foolishness and naivete. Believe me, if I can do it, so can anyone else; they just have to get over their fear of having their beliefs challenged.

I do not want to go off on a tangent, but I think that deserves a bit of discussion. If government truly was capable of solving all the problems this country faces, why do we still have so many problems? Seriously, think about that for a moment. Our government has been in existence for well over two centuries; you would think that, by now, they would have provided a solution for every conceivable problem this country might face. Yet instead of the number of problems we face diminishing, they are increasing exponentially.

One might think, if they were applying logic and reasoning to this, that government is not the solution, it is the problem. Of course, that is where the two party paradigm comes into play; as it diverts the people’s attention away from the institution of government and gives people an enemy they can blame; rather than focusing upon the failure of the institution itself.

I’ve heard it said that politics is the art of compromise. If that is true, then it begs the question; What exactly are politicians compromising in the performance of their duties?

Do they compromise their beliefs; what they claim to stand for? Do they compromise (sacrifice) the truth in order to get elected? Do they compromise (betray) those who voted them into office? Or, could it be a combination of all of the above?

One has to wonder, where is the virtue in a profession where so much compromising is going on? If one has to lie, cheat, and betray their constituents just to be successful in politics, then I don’t see any virtue in it at all. I find it pretty ironic that people look down upon prostitutes when politicians are far worse. At least a prostitute will tell you that you are going to get screwed; a politician will lie to your face, then turn around and screw you when you aren’t looking.

It took me many years of studying, pondering, and soul searching, before I came to the realization that no system of government designed by man is capable of dealing with all the problems a society might encounter; that any attempt to do so is doomed to fail from the outset. Every system of government designed by man has one thing in common; they are all designed by men. Therefore, no matter how well designed a system of government may be, it will always devolve into tyranny and despotism. Either those the people place into power will abuse the power given them, or the people will seek to use government as a tool to tyrannize those whose beliefs differ from their own. Regardless of why it happens, it always happens… ALWAYS.

I think that, subconsciously, all those years of study were preparing my mind to accept what I just discussed; that had I not prepared my mind to accept the truth, I never would have accepted it once I found it. There is a quote from Samuel Adams that I often used in my essays, back when I was still focused on government, that I think bears a bit of discussion. In a 1749 essay to the Public Advertiser Mr. Adams wrote, “[N]either the wisest constitution nor the wisest laws will secure the liberty and happiness of a people whose manners are universally corrupt.”

I think that quote had been sitting there in the back of my mind, like a seed, waiting for just the right soil conditions to germinate. In a way it kind of reminds me of the parable of the Sower that Christ used; how some seeds sprouted and died, while others sprouted and produced in abundance. The similarity between the two is obvious; for a seed to grow it needs the right soil conditions, for the truth to be accepted, one needs the right mindset; which can only come about if one opens their mind to the truth; regardless of whether or not it supports their existing beliefs.

I have had people tell me that if I do not vote that I am part of the problem; for I am not attempting to place the ‘right’ people into office to ‘fix’ what is wrong in America. Not only is that complete and utter nonsense, it shows a serious lack of understanding in regards to just how screwed up things really are in America.

For one thing, and this should be obvious, when you have a system that two differing ideologies seek control of, the political power always shifts back and forth between them; like a pendulum swinging back and forth from the left to the right, then back again. So, even if the voters do happen to put the ‘right’ person into power (which usually isn’t the case) that person is soon replaced by the ‘wrong’ person. Therefore, any good that that ‘right’ person might have done is typically undone when the ‘wrong’ person gets into office.

There is no fixing that, not as long as the system exists. The people will always put those into office who promise to address the issues that concern them the most, or promise to do things that will benefit them individually. The only system that would be free of that inherent flaw would be one designed by God; for God does not take sides; He treats each of us the same. So, no matter if you are rich or poor; Caucasian or Hispanic; highly intelligent or illiterate, God treats us all the same. Therefore, only a system designed by God could ever hope of being truly unbiased, impartial, and just; for only God’s law is perfect. Yet people do not want God’s law to govern over them; they want to keep God caged up inside their churches so that government is free to do everything they expect it to do.

Ouch, I bet that stung!

That is why I do not vote. I recognize the flaws in our system, and I realize that voting is an exercise in futility. Does that mean I do not care about what is going on? Of course not; I simply realize that the answers to all our problems won’t be found in government, or the Constitution; they’ll be found in the Bible.

Sadly, unless God Himself came down and ruled over us, even a system designed by Him would have to be administered by men; which means it would be susceptible to the same weaknesses the men are susceptible to. The Bible teaches us this; if we have eyes to see what it says.

God gave His perfect law to Moses, and Moses appointed judges to ensure that it was enforced. Over time those judges gave rise to the Sanhedrin; the very body that Christ called hypocrites and vipers; the same governing body that called for our Lord and Savior to be sent to His death because He threatened their interpretation (understanding) of God’s law.

Now think about that. If the religious leadership could not recognize the Messiah when He was standing right in front of them, how much less so would priests and pastors today be able to understand, and preach, His teachings so that their congregation walked with God?

I’m not saying I’m any kind of a biblical expert, but that much is obvious even to me.

I think too many people get so hung up on the ‘issues’ that they fail to see the bigger picture; that there are (regardless of whether people choose to believe this) forces of darkness at work in the world; that those forces of darkness use political systems to accomplish their goals. I believe that anything that turns one away from God, or obedience to His laws, can only be classified as evil.

Having said that, can anyone show me where the Constitution states that the function of the government it establishes is to ensure that God’s laws are upheld? Anyone??? Can anyone show me where the laws being passed by government are in accordance with the laws given to us by God? Can anyone show me where the things they are teaching our children in school are preparing them to grow up as God fearing citizens?

We, those who follow Christ, are supposed to be beacons of light so that the world can see God’s glory; yet we hide our light (our beliefs) because we fear being condemned and criticized by those who live in darkness. Here is just one example of how we have failed. For nearly 50 years Christian America continued to support the institution that gave its blessing to the murdering of millions of unborn children – abortion. Even now, with the Roe v Wade decision having been overturned, government did not declare abortion to be a sin; it merely kicked the can down to the state governments for them to decide. Yet people, Christian people, still support this system. Absolutely mind boggling!

Saying that one believes in God, or the fact that you attend church regularly, does not make one a Christian. For as Christ said,By their fruits ye shall know them.” (Matthew 7:20) While we are called to preach the good news to all, we are also told, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? (2 Corinthians 6:14)

If you vote, if you support our system of government, you are yoking yourself to a system that does not recognize God as the supreme legislator; a system that, more often that not, operates contrary to God’s law. I don’t know how else to put it, if you do that, then you are aligning yourself with the forces of darkness; or, you are being used as a pawn by them because you refuse to open your eyes and see the truth.

While this does not expressly pertain to what I’ve been talking about, I felt it was worth a mention. Yesterday I saw a video of Donald Trump being interviewed and he stated that he did not feel the need to repent; that he was a good person and therefore did not need to repent of anything he’s done. What gall! We are all sinners, and we are all in need of repentance. I cannot believe that any Christian would continue to support a president who made that kind of a comment; yet try telling that to the millions of Trump supporters. If Trump is representative of the best the Republicans have to offer, one can only imagine how bad those the Democrats plan to run for president in 2028.

I truly believe that people want to fix what is wrong in this country; most of them anyway. I simply think they are looking in the wrong place for answers. The answer is simple, If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

And that’s all I have to say for today. Have a blessed day…
