Silver prices likely to rocket by mid-year on solar push

NEW DELHI: Traders expect silver prices to touch Rs 40,000-41,000 a kg in the physical market by the middle of this year as demand for solar panels and electrical vehicles is increasing. The metal closed at Rs 39,237 a kg in the spot market in 2017-end. 

"Demand for silver has been increasing since the past few years and so have the prices. Demand is largely coming from solar panel and electric vehicle manufacturers. We expect silver prices to be bullish this year and may touch Rs 40,000-41,000 a kg on MCX or in the physical market by July-August," said Anuj Gupta, deputy vice-president of research, Angel Commodities. 

In the domestic market, silver prices remained volatile in 2017 touching a high of Rs 43,990 a kg and low of Rs 35,460 a kg. Demand for silver used in solar photovoltaic applications rose 23 per cent last year, the second straight year of increases, according to Thomson Reuters GFMS survey. 

Amount of silver used in solar cells comes down 5-6 per cent every year. Still, that's offset by the growth in the overall market of 20 per cent a year. 



Hindustan Zinc, which produces 500 tonnes of silver a year, is bullish about the demand in the domestic market. Sunil Duggal, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, said currently India was a 100per cent importer of solar parts where silver is used, which are majorly imported from China and Japan. 

"To produce 100 GW of solar energy by 2022, and for producing solar parts, India's silver consumption will be about 4,000 tonnes," he said. Seeing the growth opportunity, the company is raising its silver production to 1,000 tonnes over the next 3-5 years, Duggal said. "The expansion will give a boost to solar power generation in India and provide the much needed silver as raw material for startups working towards development of solar components indigenously," he added. 

"Consumption of silver in panels is being reduced and getting replaced by copper. However, the gigantic increase in module production is leading to high consumption of silver," said Anmol Singh Jaggi, director of Gensol, a solar design and engineering company in India. 

Similarly, Mudit Jain, senior manager at solar consultancy firm, Bridge to India, said: "When we talk of a module, the most expensive component is a wafer, the second-most expensive component is silver, in terms of the value addition that goes in. Whenever silver prices rise, people switch to alternatives like copper and aluminium. Ultimately, it depends on the fluctuation of commodity markets," he said.
